What are 2D Barcodes?

The fancy barcode on the left above is QR Code, while the barcode on the right is GS1 Databar. Both are types of 2D barcodes.

2D means two dimensional - that is, information is encoded vertically as well as horizontally. Conventional barcodes just get wider as more data is encoded, while 2D barcodes can also make use of the vertical dimension to pack more data in.
